Usually I wouldn't care very much about such matters, but this does show that (arguably) innovative open-world RPG's that give the players freedom sell better than limiting games that are the same every year with only slight modifications. Well at least I hope it does.
Below are the top 10 sellers for last week.
1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
3. Just Dance 3
4. FIFA 12
5. Assassin's Creed: Revelations
6. Battlefield 3
7. Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call
8. Saints Row: The Third
9. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
10. Mario Kart 7
Now, if only people would stop buying Just Dance 3....
Notice how all the games on that list are sequels, I think that says more than anything.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anybody in the UK has any interest in the VGAs
ReplyDeleteThe VGAs mean nothing. I agree that Skyrim is the best game this year, but the fact that MW3 got second just shows it's a huge advertising showoff. Anyone who actually pays attention to them is a tool.
ReplyDeleteLooking at how the VGAs were set up and the way that it played out as a popularity contest took any real enjoyment out of it for me. Mark Hamill was robbed.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why all the games on that list are sequels is that the people who are spending millions in a risky market want to make it back. The easiest way to do this is to take an already-successful franchise (with its existing playerbase) and release a sequel to which all the fans have pledged their desire.
ReplyDeleteThis does not show that games that limit the player less sell better than those that limit more. It shows that Skyrim sold more than MW3, that's all. In the end it's a mixture of game quality and advertising campaign.
ReplyDeleteIts because Skyrim was heavily discounted in most major stores and supermarkets in the uk this last week.... about a 1/3rd off in GAME, HMV, Tescos, etc
ReplyDeleteMario Kart 7? Really? That is all.
ReplyDeleteWhat's wrong with Just Dance? Not my cup of tea, but I'm glad to see that non-"hardcore" games make the list. It shows how diverse the gaming crowd is.
ReplyDeleteThe worst thing that can happen is a top ten made out of corridor shooters. Fortunately that's not the case.
GO bethesda! you take away MW3's glory...on a brighter note, its good to see mario kart up there lol

ReplyDeleteredlettermedia talks a bit about sequels 8min into the review. Seems like the trend has spread to the gaming industry now too.
Calling Skyrim a sequel to Oblivion is about as inaccurate as calling Fallout 3 a sequel to Fallout 2.
ReplyDeleteProbs helped by the fact Skyrim was slashed down to £22.50 where MW3 stayed £35+
ReplyDeleteBut this does show that innovative games sell better than games that re-hash the same crap year after year.
ReplyDeleteFTFY
Kinda surprised at layton placing at 7th.
ReplyDeletemodern warfare 3 has over 1 billion dollars in sales, go to yahoo you twats.
ReplyDeleteYeah, 1 billion dollars World wide you fuckin retard. Read the fuckin headline again.
